See you in the movies: Bonacio to announce theater operator
The city is one step closer to having its own movie theater, as Bonacio Construction plans a statement today regarding the theater’s future operator.
“We will be announcing the movie theater’s operator today,” said Kate Jarosh, assistant comptroller at Bonacio. “You can find more information at 10 a.m. at 19 Railroad Place.”The city is one step closer to having its own movie theater, as Bonacio Construction plans a statement today regarding the theater’s future operator.
Since the 19 Railroad Place Price Chopper closed in April and Price Chopper Limited opened in Market Center at Railroad Place, the city has been waiting to see what comes next. Bonacio satisfied everyone’s curiosity by buying the one-acre parcel of land at Railroad Place and Church Street, and the empty former grocery store standing on it. In June, the construction company appeared before the city Planning Board with its vision for the lot: an 11-screen movie theater. The board approved the estimated $18 million project in July.
The majority of the existing 24,000-square-foot building will be maintained and renovated. A three-story, 36,000-square-foot addition will be constructed on the north and east sides of the current structure, wrapping around the existing building, and bringing the outside walls closer to the streets. That addition will house commercial and office space.
Plans also show a second-floor porch overlooking the corner of Railroad Place and Church Street. Underneath that second-story porch, an indoor fountain and deck will lead into the movie theater.
Also in July, the Saratoga County Industrial Development Agency awarded Bonacio close to $1 million in tax breaks for the project. This includes sales, mortgage, and property tax revenues. The construction company president, Sonny Bonacio, said the reduced amount of breaks could ultimately make his search for a theater operator a little more difficult, as it would affect the rental rate.
