Broadway boom

Several new storefronts have revealed themselves along the northern end of Broadway in the last few weeks. Here's hoping that the revitalization of this section of Saratoga's main drag, which seems to be known for its high business turnover, will be long-lasting.

80 West, a clothing and shoes boutique, moved to 510 Broadway from its original location at 80 West Circular Street. The new shop has vintage glam feel, says owner Barbara Macina. In between one bright green wall and a black-and-white wallpapered one hang racks of dresses and hats suitable for the track. The store will also carry accessories, beauty products and denim wear. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Clothes Line, a women's apparel store, opened this month at 486 Broadway. Owner Sara Colman says the store caters to women of all sizes and shapes, with a special appeal to full-figured women. She carries swimwear, cover-ups, dresses, sandals, casual sportswear and lingerie. Stop by between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday or 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

A piano restoration shop is making its Saratoga debut after a South Glens Falls location — called Magdalena's House of Pianos — closed last fall amidst national economic chaos. Saratoga Mystique, at 514 Broadway, will serve as both a restoration and sales gallery for vintage and contemporary pianos as well as a performance space, say owners Maggie and Michael Prisco. The couple plans to hold concerts and recitals in the 1,500 square foot space and welcomes passersby to stop and tinkle the keys displayed in their gleaming, gold-polished storefront.

Developments on the restaurant scene are taking shape just before the summer season gets into full swing:

Esperanto's at 6-1/2 Caroline St. plans to open an expanded dining space in July. No word yet on possible changes to the menu, but don't worry: the famous Doughboy isn't going anywhere.

If four locations throughout the city weren't enough, a new Subway opened Friday at 170 S. Broadway, in the former Quizno's location. Fresh baked white chocolate macadamia cookies? ... mmm ... I'm there, right after I pick up my laundry at Cudney's.

Blog now open for business

Hi all, and welcome to In The Biz, a blog to supplement the business and (occasionally) the education beats I cover for the print edition of The Saratogian.
I intend for this virtual space to serve as a forum for engaging, respectful discussion between members of the community, including local business owners, consumers and online readers in general.
My aim is to keep my finger on the pulse of the Saratoga business scene and provide weekly updates on openings, closings, news and trends.
Every now and then I might throw in a post about something unrelated to the beat, just to spice things up a bit.
I welcome your ideas and tips, which you can post as comments to the blog or e-mail to me at mnicosia@saratogian.com.

Cheers,
Mareesa
