There’s a new dog in town, and he’s making a stink.

  
The Stinky Dog store, a new stinky-themed gift shop located at 488 Broadway in Saratoga Springs, will open Friday.

Though entirely based around a cartoon dog, it’s a store for humans, selling apparel and products for human use.

Owner Samantha Horwood McCullough of Niskayuna is redefining the word stinky. “I wanted to make it a fun experience for people,” she said with bright-colored murals and elaborate displays, “When you walk in the door you come into a little cartoon world,” she said. “I just really want a place where you can kind of leave the outside world and come and just be in a cartoon for a few minutes.”

Horwood McCullough has been selling Stinky products for more than 16 years. She first started the company in Portland, Oregon. Stinky was born of an an old tweed coat thrown away by a homeless man. Horwood McCullough then turned it into a stuffed dog that she gave her boyfriend, now-husband, as a gift.    

The Broadway store is actually the second Stinky store to open in the area. Horwood McCullough had a little shop in Northville from about 2007 to 2010.

When Compliments To the Chef left a vacancy on Broadway in Saratoga, Horwood McCullough new it had to be the Stinky store. “I jumped on it,” she said.

In just six weeks, she’s made it all Stinky-themed, and will soon be open for business. She’s happy to once again be telling customers to “Have a stinky day!”

There’s also a ton of new products and designs for familiar Stinky customers to discover.

Merchandise ranges in price from small $2.50 gifts to original artwork priced more than $1,000. The store carries adults, kids and baby clothing, featuring Stinky the dog, often accompanied with cute, clever sayings.  Stinky accessories, Stinky underwear and Stinky soap are all available in the shop too. “ I have all kinds of stinky stuff,” the Stinky creator said. “Everything is Stinky.”

A grand opening celebration will take place on Saturday, Oct. 18 with a raffle, stinky cookies and stinky prizes .

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Horwood McCullough is currently the only employee, but she’s looking for part time help.
